Title: Chief, Battlefield Environment Division, DB-5 (Interdisciplinary:
Engineering, Physical/Computer Sciences,or Mathematics)
Salary: $124,736 - $149,200

Location: U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Computational and Information Sciences
Directorate, Adelphi, Maryland

Duties: The Battlefield Environment Division specializes in researching
atmospheric mesoscale and microscale modeling, nonlinear dynamics and turbulence,
boundary layer processes, transport and diffusion, surface-atmosphere
interactions, atmospheric propagation and radiative transfer, aerosol scattering,
detection of biological aerosols, and atmospheric acoustics. The incumbent of
this position must possess a broad understanding of tropospheric/boundary layer
processes and atmospheric physics. The incumbent is responsible for managing and
leading a division of 75-125 scientists and engineers in atmospheric research
relating to the Earth’s troposphere and planetary boundary layer over land. The
incumbent will also manage and direct the research and development activities of
the civilian technical staff engaged in a broad range of research programs that
have a substantial impact upon U.S. and allied national defense efforts and the
design and selection of materiel and equipment. Develops, defends and executes a
multi-million dollar budget, including both in-house resources and out-of-house
efforts to include contractor, university and private sector associates.

In addition to the managerial demands of the position, the incumbent serves as an
internationally recognized authority and leader in the area of atmospheric
sciences or meteorology. The work directed and supervised is of such unusual
productivity, creativity, and depth of insight as to produce a substantial
variety of new methods and techniques, new approaches to formerly intractable
problems, or identification of important new concepts or discoveries. Findings
and results have widespread applicability, influence other fields of science and
technology, and will likely serve as a major stimulus to scientific and
technological effort by others in the field. Recognition may be demonstrated by
the individual’s publication record, inventions, development of new designs and
techniques, honors and awards, representational activities, and reputation as a
scientific leader.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD: The individual selected for this position will be required
to complete a 1-year supervisory probationary period, if not completed in a
previous Federal government position.

amended, which requires the submission of a financial disclosure statement, SF
